ipse dixit

There is something old and true in fantasy that speaks to something deep within us, to the child who dreamt that one day he would hunt the forests of the night, and feast beneath the hollow hills, and find a love to last forever somewhere south of Oz and north of Shangri-La.

— George R.R. Martin

Ἀπόλλων και Ἄρτεμις

Apollo and Artemis are the twin gods; he is the god of sun, truth and prophecy, healing, plague, music and poetry, and she is the goddess of the moon, hunt, archery, wild animal, wilderness, childbirth and virginity.

Apollo had many lovers, men (Hyacinth, Cyrapissus) and women (Cassandra, Dafne). Also he is the father of many children, for example Asclepius, son of Coronis; Orpheus, son of Calliope; Aristaeus, son of Cyrene; and Philammon, son of Chione. Meanwhile, Artemis, a strong and brave maiden, had not any children nor lover, except her hunting companion Orion. But, as the goddess of virginity, she never got married with someone.

They are the children of Zeus and the mortal Leto. When Zeus’ wife Hera discovered that Leto was pregnant and that Zeus was the father, she banned Leto from giving birth on “terra firma”. In her wanderings, Leto found the newly created floating island of Delos, which was neither mainland nor a real island. She gave birth there Artemis first, and she became her mother’s mid-wife upon the birth of her brother Apollo.

"The two of them were lying back-to-back, so tightly against each other it was as if their spines were fused. Their arms and legs were curled up in identical positions, their chins tucked into their chest. She imagined them in their Mother’s womb like that, resting together, innocent of all the horrors that waited for them on the outside."

This makes me cry :This picture is from an article called “The Rescuing Hug”. The article details the first week of life of a set of twins. Each were in their respective incubators and one was not expected to live. A hospital nurse fought against the hospital rules and placed the babies in one incubator. When they were placed together, the healthier of the two, threw an arm over her sister in an endearing embrace. The smaller baby’s heart stabilized and temperature rose to normal.

It is interesting to note that the only times Fred or George have been injured were when they were apart. They were split up at the time of Fred’s death and when George lost his ear.
